The unexpected backing of Crystal Waters turbocharged RobbieG’s DJ career and saw him tour Ireland half a dozen times.
One half of Belters Only – who are currently sitting eighth in the UK Top 40 – Robbie Griffiths spoke to That DJ Podcast about how his remix of Crystal Waters – Gypsy Woman led him on to remix one of his dad’s favourite artists.
“So I was in my element at this point, I was in form. Because of this track blowing up everyone all over Ireland was listening to it (Gypsy Woman),” said Robbie.
“So I actually started to tour the country and I toured Ireland like six or seven times off the back of Gypsy Woman.
“Then what happened then was a year went by, I was DJing, making music happily and I then got asked by Universal to come back and do another track for their volume four because Gypsy Woman got the most viewed track on the album that year.
“They basically gave me a list of artists and said ‘Listen, we can give you the rights to any of these tracks, just pick one. One of them was Boyz II Men.
“Obviously, my dad loves Boyz II Men, so straight away I just said, right, I need to get one of these tracks. I wanted to do End of the Road, but that is in a film or something like that, so the rights, I would have needed to clear the rights for the video as well.
“So I picked On Bended Knee and I remixed On Bended Knee. It blew from there. Gypsy Woman was good and it’s still one of my most viewed tracks to this day, but when On Bended Knee blew up, that kind of really set the standard for the quality of the music that I was making and let everybody know this is what I’m about.
“You know, because people all over the world still listen to that track today and it got massive success. That track has been out nearly three and a half years now, but that project’s not finished yet, I still have plans with that track now to try and get that out as an original.
“But yeah, that would be the one that kind of set the standard and made me realise this could be an actual career.
“I always believed it, but when I actually saw what happened there I was like, ‘this is it now’, you know.”
